The Modern Coach Is No Longer Just a Coach

Are we preparing golf coaches for the profession that exists today, or the profession that existed 30 years ago?

I don't believe most golf coach education pathways have kept pace with the reality of modern coaching.

The traditional model was built to prepare professionals for life at a golf club.

》 Teaching lessons.
》 Running competitions.
》 Working in retail.
》 Supporting members.

For decades, that was exactly what the industry needed.

But look at the role of a coach today. Many coaches now run businesses. They operate academies. Manage indoor facilities. Build online coaching programmes. Create content. Work with players remotely. Use launch monitors, force plates and AI-powered tools. Sell products and services. Build communities.

The modern coach is no longer just a coach. They're a business owner.

》 A marketer.
》 A content creator.
》 A technology operator.
》 An entrepreneur.

Yet many education pathways still dedicate very little time to the skills that determine whether a coach succeeds in today's industry.

How much time is spent on:

  • Building a coaching business?
  • Marketing and client acquisition?
  • Online coaching?
  • Social media?
  • Technology integration?
  • Data analysis?
  • Artificial intelligence?
  • Creating scalable products and services?

These are no longer optional skills. They are becoming fundamental parts of the profession.

The result is that many coaches leave education programmes technically competent, but commercially unprepared for the reality of building a career in modern golf.

That's not a criticism of the organisations delivering education. It's a reflection of how quickly the profession has evolved.

And it's one of the reasons we built Coach Hub. Not to replace traditional coach education. But to fill the gaps. To give coaches access to the knowledge, insights and expertise that many never had the opportunity to learn through traditional pathways.

Because the future of coaching requires more than understanding the golf swing. It requires understanding the entire ecosystem around the golfer and the business behind the coach.

The profession has changed. Coach education needs to change with it.
